St. Paul`s Bay

by edinka - last update: Nov 9, 2004

Me in Qawra Bay
St. Paul`s Bay is one of the most popular tourist resorts in Malta. According to the legends, St Paul was shipwrecked here when trying to escape from the Rome. While he stayed here, he christianised whole Malta population and he left back to Rome. All along the Malta seashore there are statues of St Paul. Although scholars
debate whether St Paul was in fact shipwrecked in this beautiful bay -
the wind and waves directions would make Mellieha Bay a much more
likelier location. Most Maltese accepts the tradition and accept that
this is were it happened in 60 A.D. So the tiny St Paul’s Island at the
mouth of the bay, has a huge marble statute of the apostle and the
precise spot where St Paul and St Luke and their companions made their historic but hazardous landing is marked by a church.

Saint Pauls Bay , like many of the holiday resorts in Malta and Gozo, was a small fishing village dating back almost 1000 years. It grew after the war and provided summer residences for families living inland, a tradition still kept today. However, many young families have now settled here, making St Paul' Bay an all year resort. It's main physical attraction is the arguably best looking bay on the Islands, with the photogenic St Paul's Islet in the focal point. During the 1960's and 1980's, the area mushroomed into a major resort, and together with Bugibba and Qawra, today provide many holiday facilities and accommodation.
