Things To Do: Safaris in West Africa

  • In West Africa, there’re also places to go on Safari.
They might be unknown, but they’re worth a visit.
Niokolo Koba for instance, it’s located in south east Senegal and is a WHS site.
The scenery is magnificent, you can find Chimpanzees over here and do pirogue trips on the Gambia River.
The abundance of wildlife isn’t as big as in the Parks of East and South Africa, but with some patience, you’ll always spot animals.
    Niokolo Koba
Below you'll find some information on a other West African Safari destination.

  • These crystal clear pools are a favourite hangout for hippos and crocodiles. The main attraction is a submerged viewing tank which was designed so that people could watch the hippo's antics underwater, but since it was built the hippos have retreated shyly to the other side of the pool. The good news is that you get a great view of the fish. The underground water that feeds the pools filters up through the volcanic rock of the Chyulu Hills and it is linked by pipeline to Mombasa, supplying most of the town's water.

  • Many travellers are attracted to the highest point in Africa - Uhuru Peak on Kibo - which can be reached by several easy walking or scrambling routes. The two main summits of Kilimanjaro: craggy Mawenzi, 5149m, and 'flat-topped', Kibo, 5896m are separated by The Saddle, a 5km wide, high-altitude, semi-desert. From the summit glaciers, screes, cliffs, afro-alpine moorland then forests lead down to the cultivated foothills below.

  • Nakuru national park was declared a rhino sanctuary in 1987, when there were only two resident black rhinos. A further 16 were introduced from Solio Ranch, followed by four specimens brought from Nairobi national park in 1990. The first two white rhinos were introduced in the park from Lewa Downs. In 1995, a bigger group of 10 was brought from South Africa. Secure from poachers' attacks thanks to the electric fencing, the rhino population at Nakuru progresses positively and it is easy to find the white rhinos grazing on the clearings by the lake. The browser black rhinos feed on the bush and forest areas,

  • Larabanga is situated in the north of Ghana 16 km west of Damongo and only about 2.5 km away of the Mole National Park.
This place is known for its ancient mosque.
It is a common believe that this mosque is the oldest mosque in Ghana.
Even the present generation think it was built by God.
The so-called "God built mosque" also houses a holy Koran which also is believed to descent from heaven.
This holy book is read once in a year or so during a special ceremony.
