Off The Beaten Path: Helchteren forest-Remo-Stakeberg

This is one of the last big remaining forests and nature reserves in the province of Limburg.
It’s situated in between the towns of Leopoldsburg-Hechtel-Helchteren-Heusden with a surface of +/- 30 square KM.

This area is the ideal place to spot the local wildlife(mammals, birdlife, reptiles,...) and to enjoy the scenery while you’re on a hiking trip.
When you’re walking in this area you’ll notice all the different habitats and vegetation.

Off The Beaten Path: Ten Haagdoornheide Reserve

The "Ten Haagdoornheide reserve" is located in the south of Houthalen - Helchteren.
The area consists out of mixed forests, heater/grass plains and sandy dunes.
The main objective in this area is sheep farming, but you can also make walking trips and you'll be sweet for several hours.
Nearby you can find the "Limburg Golf" terrain when you’re interested in a match.
You can find hiking maps in the Houthalen tourist office or follow the hiking trails inside the reserve.

The "Mangel"creek valley is a small (415ha.) reserve in my front yard and it is connected via a tunnel with the Helchteren forest-Remo-Stakeberg area.
The remoteness and bad accessibility gives the area a rich and varied ecosystem.
