My Favorite Destination in Europe: Antibes

The smell of pines add to the beautiful view...
One of my childhood friend's had a framed poster in her house of a Picasso with the caption "Picasso Museum ANTIBES." It was displayed in her father's den years, and for some reason this image stuck with me. So, remembering the name of this town while I was on the Cote D'Azur, I decided on a whim to go check it out. Frankly, it was the highlight of my trip and I would move there in a heartbeat! It has the best of the Riviera--good beaches, shopping, beautiful historic center, tasty food--and very little of the snobbery, despite being home to the biggest private yacht harbor on the continent. There are some very worthwhile museums and other standard "sights," but this is a place filled with real atmosphere and liveliness in its streets.
One potential downside for visitors could be the amount of foreigners that make their homes in the city. They are mostly Anglo young men who have some connection to the harbor, and a smattering of expats. This could be a detractor for some, but I loved the company and it made for some extremely fun nights on the town. However, it is not a huge party scene--that is saved for the jetsetters nextdoor at Juan-les-Pins.
Antibes is also a good base for daytrips to some of the smaller, less attractive, or more expensive towns in the area. It is a somewhat major stop on the train line and has good bus connections. Some easy options include Biot (30 min. by bus), Cannes (25 min. by train) and Nice (15 min. by train).

Pros:"History, Beaches, Liveliness, Great Food, Shopping....the best destination"
Cons:"None - hey, I'm biased!"
In A Nutshell:"GO! GO!"
