University Town

Freiburg is an old university town on the edge of the Black Forest. It used to be a walled town in the Middle Ages and you can still see two of the gates to the town. This one, St. Martin's gate, is in the historical Old Town section, which was a pleasure to walk through.

There are waterways cut into the streets for water to run through in the summertime. They used to be (and perhaps still are) used for cooling off. I bet that running water is a nice addition to the feel of downtown on a hot summer day.
