    • Favorite Thing: Cannon Beach is best known for Haystack Rock, a rocky monolith jutting out of the water that's been designated as a marine and bird sanctuary. Puffins nest here in the summertime. It's a nice place to walk along the beach and commune with nature.

    The inter-tidal zone (area of the beach between high tide and low tide) is full of small limpets, barnacles, and colorful starfish, and lends itself nicely to quiet exploration and contemplation.

    • Favorite Thing: Besides walking right on the beach, there are a number of trails right outside of town that wander along forested cliffs by the ocean and give you some good lookouts up and down the coast. Much of the year mists and fog banks roll in and out from the Pacific.

    Ecola State Park is a good place to start. Ecola means whale in the Native American Chinook language, and you can see migrating orcas and gray whales from here in the spring.
