| | The People I only spent one day and two nights in Amsterdam - this is the first time I've tried spending less than a week in a place, and it turned out quite well. I thoroughly enjoyed my one day here on my way home from Venice. The Dutch people made quite an impression on me in such a short period of time! They seemed particularly friendly and helpful, always had a big smile, and seemed very content. They really stood out in this way : )
They also really stood out in that they were TALL! A lot taller than the average person in Italy, where I had just come from. I noticed it as soon as I got on the KLM plane in Venice - the flight attendants seemed about a foot taller than everyone else. In Italy I was taller than most people, but in Amsterdam I was shorter than everyone. |
The City My next biggest impression is of the canals, of course, and the narrow, leaning, gabled houses. The canals are very pleasant, and seemed much more calm than the canals in Venice. As for the famous coffeehouses and red-light district, they will have to wait till I have more time in this city than one short day...
The Heron Plus a huge heron, who I wasn't expecting at all, made a big impression on me just a few hours after I arrived. (For a long time I thought he was a stork.) I learned that herons and storks are quite common here, much to my surprise. He is one of my best memories from Holland! | | |
