  • San Giorgio dei Greci - the smell of incense is my most vivid impression from this Greek Orthodox church in Castello. It's in a pleasant, green courtyard on a canal by the Ponte dei Greci. The inside is small, peaceful, and intimate, full of beautiful mosaics and Byzantine icons done by iconographers from Crete in the 1500's.

  • While plenty of people make their way to Ca Rezzonico, not so many make it all the way up to the top floor of this palazzo, where the "Martini Collection" resides. Many centuries of Venetian painters are represented here, and many of the paintings are of sensual nudes or semi-nudes. It's worth a stroll through!

in Dorsoduro, at the Ca Rezzonico vaporetto stop on the Grand Canal

  • The Museo Ebraico in the Ghetto section of Cannaregio offers a short tour of three of the five remaining synagogues in Venice's small Orthodox Jewish community (at its height the Jewish community here numbered about 5,000). You just would never guess that some of these buildings had synagogues inside, sometimes on the upper floors. They're small but beautiful, and each different from the other as one is Germanic, one Spanish, and one Levantine. Unfortunately you can't take pictures inside, so you'll just have to go and see them for yourself!

Tours are given once an hour at half past the hour, at Campo Ghetto Nuovo, in Cannaregio.

    Churches: Fantastic Ceiling

  • San Pantalon - I'd never heard of Fumiani until I went to Venice, but he painted one helluva fantastic ceiling here in the late 1600's. His dark, winged vision of the martyrdom of Saint Pantalon is spectacular, very much a 3-D illusionistic work. You'd never guess by the plain look of the church on the outside. At Campo San Pantalon, in Dorsoduro.

Open only from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, Monday through Saturday.

  • Scuola di San Giorgio degli Schiavoni - This small headquarters of the Slavic or Dalmation (Croatian) merchant community of Venice has a wonderful narrative cycle of paintings by Carpaccio, still in the original building for which they were created. They feature the three Dalmation patron saints (St. George, St. Tryphon, and St. Jerome), including one of the heroic St. George killing the dragon. This is a gem for any Carpaccio fans. I especially enjoyed the painting of the monks fleeing in terror from St. Jerome's friendly lion - the consternation on the saint's face is pretty funny.

Open Tues. - Sat. 9:30am to 12:30pm and 3:30pm to 6:30pm, and Sundays 9:30am to 12:30pm. Closed Mondays.

    Calle dei Furlani, Castello

Do not miss this magnificent church. The artwork, history, and craftmanship are incredible. This church is included in the Secrets of Venice Tour which is well worth doing - a great walking tour!
