As far as Courtyards go this one is pretty nice. It actually has a restaurant and bar, which many of them don't. It has lots of free parking and is only about a mile from the downtown. It is also close to the highway. The beds here are very comfortable and there is free coffee available in the lobby.

The Hampton Inn in Portsmouth is a pretty nice place to stay, and in a good location off of the highway. It's not all that close to the downtown so you'll want a car if you stay there, although they do have a free shuttle bus that runs guests back and forth to local destinations until ten PM daily. The beds were pretty comfortable and our room had a refrigerator and a microwave which was nice. I also liked the nice toiletries that they gave you in the bathroom. The only complaint I can think of is that the climate control wasn't the best; it seemed I was always too hot or too cold. It would have been better if we could have opened the window. The hotel is also fairly expensive for what you get, though most hotels in the area are on the pricey side.
Unique Qualities: The hotel has a pool and a gym, although I used neither. They also offer a pretty descent free breakfast which I was very happy to see when I woke up starving one morning. The coffee wasn't too bad either.

The Motel 6 is the least expensive place to stay in Portsmouth, which is a pretty spendy city when it comes to hotels. They offer very basic, but clean rooms. You won't get any extras here like shampoo or hairdryers, and the towels were itty bitty, but really it's not so bad if you're not planning to spend a lot of time in your room. If you're a wrinkle freak (like Ms. Jen) you should also keep in mind that they don't have ironing boards or irons. One thing they could really improve on is their staff. While they were always polite, they did have a habit of engaging in a lot of unprofessional behavior while working, things such as talking about guests while standing behind the front desk and making customers wait for service while they took cigarette breaks out front.
Unique Qualities: The Motel 6 has an outdoor pool, but it was closed for the season when we were there.
