New Orleans Tourist Traps

Tours: Haunted Walking Tours
  • Tip Rating:
  • These are expensive and overrated. They show nothing you couldn't see on your own with a good guide book and are run by theatre major drop outs who can't get real jobs. A waste of time and money. Spend the $30-$40 on drinks at a nice bar instead.

    Restaurant/Bars: Margaritaville
  • Tip Rating:
  • Unless you are VERY into Jimmy Buffet avoid this place. The food is overpriced and not very good at all and there's usually a line to get in. With so many excellent and unique resturants to choose from, why eat here?

    Street Acts: Mimes
  • Tip Rating:
  • There are lots of mimes around, especially in Jackson Sq. Unless you are prepared to loose a buck or two don't stand there and watch them. You'll either get pickpocketed or be expected to add to their hat or both.

Tourist Trap: The Konriko Rice Museum

  • I was so excited when I saw the sign for the "Rice Museum", odd person that I am, because I thought it would have all sorts of cool historical rice-related stuff. But the Konriko Rice Museum is really just an expensive place to buy rice and other Konriko products, as it turns out. You don't have to pay to get in, but unless you want to buy some pricey rice I'd just avoid the place and save your time for something else.

Great description of the things to do and see. It has been years since I have been here, but still remember the headache and next day hangover. What a place to party hard.

You have a wonderful NOLA page - excellent insight with your tips, and the photos made me homesick! Well done!

Good tourist trap tip on the "haunted tours". I went on one and bailed out as soon as we got near Bourbon Street. It was awful! I love New Orleans, though...nice pages!
