Getting TO/AROUND: Up until fairly recently, there were very few cars in St. Petersburg. Because of this, parking spaces were not included in many of the designs of the streets. Now that St. Petersburg is full of cars--everyone seems to have one--there is a serious lack of places to park and there are parked cars absolutely EVERYWHERE. It is completely lawless and one of the things that the city needs to work out. But at least you won't have to worry about getting a ticket.

    Metro: The St. Petersburg Subway
  • Tip Rating:
  • 'Mode': AROUND
    Category: Subway/Metro
Getting TO/AROUND: Photography is not allowed on the subway in St. Petersburg so I have no photographs of it, but I have to tell you that it is the most beautiful subway in the entire world. Some of its stations are absolutely breathtaking. There is one full of cut crystal columns and chandeliers, another with a beautiful statue of the poet Pushkin where people still stop by and leave flowers. Some of the stations are full of Soviet-inspired artwork that is truly a sight to behold. It is also clean, very clean. You can be arrested for littering. The stations and trains are crawling with police who seem to be just waiting for someone to commit a violation, so don't pull out camera. You might lose it, or worse, end up in prison or paying a hefty bribe. This is also the deepest subway in the world. You must descend two long escalators to reach the platforms. The reason for this is because St. Petersburg was essentially built on a swamp and the tunnels had to be cut into the underlying bedrock. If you have the chance take the subway instead of a cab.
