In the spurs of the Caucasus is situated the unknown Georgia, that still preserves their old traditions mixed with an incredible modernity. The perfect place to begin is the capital, Tbilisi, placed on the banks of the river Mtkvari. The city brings a perfect mixture of former streets in the purest oriental style, avenues plenty of 19th century buildings and monstrous constructions of soviet era.
But undoubtedly the most interesting part of Georgia are the mountainous regions, where the ancient traditions are kept, the villages preserve the same aspect of always, and the landscapes of mountains covered with snow summits and dark valleys will leave you without breath. The easiest region to arrive is Khevi, where you can admire the Kazbek mountain, one of the highest in the Caucasus. The most impressive region, for the landscapes, villages and traditions of their people is Svaneti, where svans live. The villages, with high stone towers that served to protect the inhabitants during the constant period of war between villages, still rise proudly with the background of mountains of eternal snow. Far away from Svaneti, at the other side of Georgia, there is Tusheti region, where people live only during summer months. After long trekkings you'll arrive to village of Dartlo, where Yaksharova's festival is celebrated, in honor to the angel that protects the village. The Khevsureti's region, has lost the most of his population but the ancient fortified city of Shatili makes the journey worth it.
But Georgia is not only mountains, there is also Khakheti wine region, plenty of vineyards that produce the national drink. In this region is placed one of the most interesting monasterys: David Gareji. Other places of interest are the Black sea, with Batumi's port, a mix of Georgia and turkey, and the religious centers of Mtskheta, near Tbilisi and Gelati, near Kutaisi. |
