Pulau (island) Ubin with its quiet beaches and kampong (a small village or community of houses) atmosphere is unlike modern Singapore.
It is a natural haven for many species of bird that inhabit the mangroves and forest areas.
Public pressure has halted government policy of developing Ubin, the most notably scored over Chek Jawa, a flood plain teeming with marine life at the eastern tip of the 8km long island.
Still with less than 100 people now living here, development plans are unlikely to be deferred indefinitely - visit sooner rather than later.
- Pros:A good getaway from the bustling city!
- Cons:More development sooner or later...
