State of Sabah at East Malaysia

Pulau Layang Layang is 300km northwest of Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, East Malaysia. It is surrounded by a coral atoll and it is an exclusive dive location and part of the famous (among divers) Borneo banks.

One of the scuba divers' favourite islands

Layang Layang has a growing reputation among divers as a good alternative to the wasted coral found in many other spots around Sabah. The diving is good particularly down the wall where pelagic species such as tuna, barracuda, reef sharks and hammerheads are encountered. Soft coral

Sea birds breeding grounds

Layang Layang island is also a breeding ground for sea birds such as boobies and terns.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:One of the places to see hammerhead sharks
  • Cons:Expensive and no direct flight except from Kota Kinabalu
  • In a nutshell:The nearest place to see hammerhead sharks from Singapore
