How Kowloon got her name...

The name 'Kowloon' is thought to have originated when the last emperor of the Song dynasty passed through the area during his flight from the Mongols in the late 13th century. He is said to have counted eight peaks on the peninsula and concluded that there must therefore be eight dragons there. But the young emperor was reminded that with he himself present, there were actually nine dragons. Kowloon is thus derived from the Cantonese words gau, meaning 'nine' and lung, meaning 'dragon'.

Kowloon's Short History and Geography...

Kowloon proper, the area ceded 'in perpetuity' to Britain by the Convention of Peking in 1860, extends north from the waterfront as far as Boundary Street in Mongkok. It covers about 12 sq km but land reclamation and encroachment into the New Territories, the so-called New Kowloon, over the past 150 odd years has more than quadrupled its size to almost 47 sq km or just over 4% of the total landmass.

Kowloon's Importance...

Kowloon most important area, Tsim Sha Tsui, has none of the slickness or sophistication of Hong Kong's Central except within the confines of its top-end hotels. The territory's historical and financial 'capital' lies on Hong Kong Island; Kowloon is the hinterland, a riot of commerce and tourism set against a backdrop of crumbling tenement blocks. Leave the glittering shopping centres and hotels behind and you begin to see where Hong Kong and China converge, culturally at least. East doesn't really meet west in Kowloon - it swallows up.

Kowloon is always where I stay when in HK; but I miss the atmosphere of the 1970's.
