By Hafrsfjord these three bronze swords have been put up as a monument to a Viking battle that took place here in 872 A.D. After the battle Harald H?rfagre (Fairheaded Harald) united Norway into one kingdom. This is also a very nice place to relax during the summer. There is even a little beach next to the swords.

The old town, Gamle Stavanger, lies to the north-west of the city centre. A little belt of small, white wooden houses winds its way northwards up the hillside above V?gen. The area was under threat of demolition some years ago, but thanks to a group of enthusiasts the project was stopped and the whole area preserved. Present buildings date from 1830-1890. It's a really area to walk around in.

This building used to be one of Stavanger's many canning factories. From the 1890's to about 1960 the canning industry was the most important industry in Stavanger. After 1960 the oil industry took over... In the museum you can see the whole process of how the fish was canned. The museum is located in the old town of Stavanger. The website below is in Norwgian only...

This tower was built as a lookout-tower for the city guards between 1850-1853. The museum at the top of the tower shows the history of the city guards. From here there is a nice view of the harbour (V?gen).
