Squat!!! - Bali

Squat!!!

Toilets, loos and squat toilets

A Balinese ‘squat toilet’ is
a western traveller’s worst nightmare –
and the worst of the worst is
probably one you’ll be asked to pay for!

Don’t think for one minute that
nice shops, department stores,
or even hotels at times,
will have anything other than Squat Toilets!

Above all, don’t expect toilet paper.
ALWAYS take your own for emergencies.

Have disinfectant hand wash/wipe
with you just in case.

I have Bali Beli!!! - Bali

I have Bali Beli!!!

Amebiasis Intestinalis, also known as Bali Beli

What is Bali Beli or as also known Amebiasis Intestinalis:

is an inflammation of the colon
caused by parasites that enters the body
in more common areas with
poor sanitation or living conditions

The parasites Entamoeba histolytica
causes this infection.
The single celled parasite can
live in your intestine without causing symptoms or you can
have severe symptoms.

You may become infected when
you eat food or drink water
contaminated with feces
that contain Entamoeba histolytica.

What are the Symptoms:

Diarrhea, sometimes alternating with
relatively normal bowel movements,
abdominal cramps or tenderness
bowel movements streaked with
blood or mucus
occasional fever
vomiting or nausea
dehydration

The time between the
parasite’s entry into your body
and the appearance of the
first symptoms can range to
a few days to a few months

How to diagnose:

Review symptoms and
order a lab analysis of
a sample of your bowel movement.
To rule out this Amebiasis,
at least 3 times a negative stool test
are needed.

How is it treated?:

Medication such as iodoquinol,
metronidazole, tinidazole, diloxanide furoate,
dehydroemetine, emetine or paromocycin.

If you stop taking the medication
when your symptoms are gone but
before the parasite is eliminated from
your body, your infection may return.

Amebiasis Intestinalis Part 2

How long will the effects last?

The symptoms of diarrhea usually
last 3 to 14 days but can last up to 4 weeks.
Recurrences are possible.

How to avoid it:

Only drink bottled water.
At least 3 litres a day.
Brush your teeth with same
(rinse your brush in this water too -
not the tap)
Don't swallow pool water
Don't open your mouth in the shower
Only eat hot freshly cooked foods
Use common sense and
avoid eating in places where
the hygiene may be in question.
Avoid unsanitary water supplies
Wash your hands with soap and
very warm water after going to the bathroom
and before preparing or eating food.
Avoid food that can not be cooked or peeled.
Protect food from feces, flies,
and contaminated water.
When camping, boil water for 5 minutes
or treat it with disinfected tablets.

If you do get Bali Beli:

The main problem
you will face is dehydration,
which will make you feel
exhausted, dizzy and
will give you a splitting headache.

Its important to focus on re-hydrating
the moment any stomach problems start;
worry about a diagnosis later.

Just cope with being in the tropics
you should be drinking 2-3 liters
of water a day,
but if you get diarrhea,
you’ll need a lot more.
In addition, you will be loosing minerals
and you should always carry sachets of
oral re-hydration salts (ORS) with you.

When your symptoms improve in 1 to 2 days,
eat small frequent meals or snacks.
Do not fast.
Avoid milk products and
caffeine for a few days.

Yuck!! The Water

Water Pollution

In certain areas such as,
Kuta, Seminyak and Legian,
the sea water is very contaminated
by run off from both built up areas
and surrounding farmland
that dumps into the rivers.

The water may smell and look fine,
but many people suffer from
ear infections after swimming.

Children may be more venerable
to the effects of the sea water.

So...Hati Hati!

something to think about - Bali

something to think about

Drugs...think about 3 times!

Indonesian prosecutors have wrapped up their case against Australian woman Schapelle Corby, who is on trial for smuggling drugs to Bali.
Prosecutors told the court in Denpasar that the 27-year-old beauty therapist had been caught red-handed, and should therefore be sentenced to life in jail.

Ms Corby was arrested in October after 4.1kg (9lbs) of marijuana were found in her bags at Bali airport.

Under Indonesia's tough anti-drug laws, convicted traffickers can be executed.

But Ms Corby's case has attracted widespread public interest in Australia, and the Canberra government has urged Indonesian prosecutors not to ask for the death penalty.

Friday's hearing lasted just 15 minutes, with the prosecution reading a statement rejecting arguments made by Ms Corby's defence team proclaiming her innocence.

Prosecutors dismissed the tearful pleas she made last week as emotional words which carried no legal weight.

They claimed she knew the marijuana was inside her luggage when she arrived in Bali. Ms Corby did not comment as she was led into the court hearing on Friday.

He lawyer Lily Lubis said she was suffering from stress and depression.

But she said her client was not suicidal. "She is a strong person. So I hope she will not do a stupid thing," Ms Lubis told the Australian Associated Press.

Ms Corby's defence team will be given the opportunity to respond for the final time next Thursday.

Then the judges will retire to consider their verdict.

Lock it!!!!! - Bali

Lock it!!!!!

Lock it!!!

I can't say how many times
I am surprised by people who
travel and don't lock their suitcases.

Once more than enough,
I have had things taken out of my bags
while transiting.

Even if bags have to be hand inspected
at your departure,
give them the combo number.

If they warn you that locks may be broken,
well then you know someone has gone through your suitcases.

An Australian beauty therapist accused of smuggling marijuana into the Indonesian resort of Bali has begged a court for mercy.
In her final defence plea, 27-year-old Schapelle Corby tearfully proclaimed her innocence, saying "I cannot admit to a crime I did not commit."

Ms Corby was arrested in October after 4.1 kg (9 pounds) of marijuana was found in her bags at Bali airport.

Under Indonesia's tough anti-drug laws, convicted traffickers can be executed.

But Ms Corby's case has attracted widespread public interest in Australia, and the Canberra government has urged Indonesian prosecutors not to ask for the death penalty.

In a written statement to judges at the district court in Bali's capital, Denpasar, on Thursday, Ms Corby said she was an innocent victim of Australian drug gangs.

To judges, my life at the moment is in your hands, but I would prefer that my life was in your heart

Schapelle Corby

"I say again that I have no knowledge of how the marijuana came to be inside my bag," she said.

She said she had already been punished enough for doing no more than failing to lock her bags.

"To judges, my life at the moment is in your hands, but I would prefer that my life was in your heart," she said.

Prosecutors have recommended that Ms Corby serve a life sentence, although the judges could still impose the death penalty if they convict her.

A verdict is expected by next month.
