Dazed and A-mazed in Marrakech Go slowly or marrakech will overwhelm you. Absorb the medina souk by souk and the amazing visuals a slow eye blink at a time. If you go quickly, it will be like inhaling too many perfumes or sampling too many varieties of wine at one time. Your system will go into sensory overload ! Be slow to buy, and slow to pass out money in any way. Observe the vivid game of life that is being played in the souks and Jemaa l-Fna square. We jumped right into the square and started handing out tips only to realize we were tipping much more than needed. It seems everyone in the square and the souk is connected by a quick silver stream of gossip. Once you have tipped too much or paid too much, there is no going back. You are on an iced, one way slope to suckerville and no one there is going to block your slide. If you are language impaired and only speak English, Marrakech can be challenging. The signs at locations of interest are in Arabic script and French. Sometimes it is like being pre lingual and trying to get your needs met. Many of the people speak basic english but it was hard to have heart to heart talks being Amercian and language challlenged!! I suggest taking along a french phrase book. We stayed in the old city. The walls are every where. Every step you take is taken in mystery because you do not know what is on the other side. You really have to fall into the mystery of the experience in order to appreciate the vivid cultural experience. |
