Nicosia, Lefksia in Greek, Lefkosa in Turkish, is Europe's last divided capital and certainly a must-see for every Cyprus trip! The greenline, conceived in 1964 by the British troops, goes right through the middle of the city, dividing it into two parts, whose centers are surrounded by circular city walls. There are two ways to cross the greenline: either through Paphos Gate (where the UN troops are stationed in Ledra Palace), or right on Ledra Street (a passage most tourists use). Make sure you have a valid passport and keep the visa paper you get.

Both parts have lots of historic things to visit, be it the Archbishop's Palace in the Greek part, or the Selim Mosque (former Agia Sophia Cathedral) in the Turkish part. The city is oriental and you can see its influences on either side.

The best way to experience Nicosia as a whole - without the greenline - in its entire beauty, is a look from Shakolas Tower, which has a viewing platform.

Nicosia was originally limited to the districts surrounded by solid city walls. You can walk from one gate to another on both the Greek and the Turkish side in a circle. This picture shows a sports area right outside the city walls on the Greek part.
