State of Queensland Warnings Or Dangers
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Warnings Or Dangers: Mean jelly fish
  • Tip Rating:
  • Queensland has the most amazing beaches, but often you can't really enjoy them because deadly stingers can be found in the coastal waters. There are two types, the tiny Irukandji (1-2cm across) and the much larger Chironex box jellyfish, both are potentially lethal. They occur the ocean just North of Bundaberg up to Cape York between October/November and March/April. If you still want to swim during that time, look out for stingernet enclosures or wear a fullbody stingersuit. Should you get stung, have the area immidiately flushed with vinegar and seak further medical aid.
Luckily I just had an encounter with some of their relatives, but that DID hurt aswell and I was full of scars of some weeks.

    Warnings Or Dangers: Crocodiles
  • Tip Rating:
  • The coastal waters and rivers of Northern Queensland do have another dangerous inhabitant: the estuarine or saltwater crocodile. They are the largest crocodiles on this planet (up to 7m long) and are especially aggressive. If you are visiting a crocodile area (they are protected btw) stay away from the water's edge!
I just saw one during my visits when I went on one of those crocodile cruises on the Daintree river. Quite a scary sight.

Birgit, Sounds like a very exciting trip and you saw so much! Great hotel/hostel tips too. Do you always book ahead or just inquire as you arrive at any one destination? THANKS again very much for your most recent postcard--it's really terrific! sylvia
