Cape Town Off The Beaten Path
Sort by: Most Recent | Best Rated | Author's Order

Off The Beaten Path: Silvermine Nature Reserve
  • Tip Rating:
  • Silvermine Nature Reserve is located South of Cape Town and was named after some unsuccessful attempts to mine silver here. It's a beautiful place to go hiking though. You'll wander through fynbos (the local bush) and if you you come in autumn you'll see the proteas blossoming.
There's a car park on Ou Kaapse Weg from where a lot of the trails start. Entrance is 10 Rand per car if I remember it correctly.

Off The Beaten Path: Hout Bay
  • Tip Rating:
  • Hout Bay is a small town South of Cape Town which is know for it's fishmarket. Mariner's wharf is also a great place to visit, if you're looking for some souvenirs or if you're hungry.
The scenic Chapman's Peak Drive starts at Hout Bay. It's a 5km toll road and the fee is 22 Rand per car. Unfortunately the weather was rainy and foggy when was there, so I just could guess how amazing the views must be.

    Beaches: Bloubergstrand
  • Tip Rating:
  • Bloubergstrand is located about 25km North of Cape Town and it's the place to go for great fotos of the town with Table Mountain in the background (see my intro pic). The Beach is fantastic aswell and there were some surfers in the water (way too cold for my liking).
Unfortunately there's been quite a bit of construction going on and highrise apartment blocks dominate the town.

    Wine Region: Franschhoek
  • Tip Rating:
  • Franschhoek is a lovely little about 85km from Cape Town in mid of the wine region. It's well know for its fantastic restaurant, but has some wineries aswell. It's the place where French Huguenots settled back in the 17th century and you'll find a monument and a museum dedicated to them in town.
We've had a great lunch at "La Petite Ferme", which has a great garden with splended views over Franschhoek and the valley.
