Of course you have too see one of Sydney's most famous sights: the Opera House. The construction started already in 1959 with the Danish architect Joern Utzon in charge. In 1966 Utzon left the project to an consortium of Australian architects to design the interior. Costs of building exceeded the budget dramatically and lotteries had to be staged to secure the financing. The building was finally completed in 1973 and inaugurated by Queen Elizabeth II. I saw a ballett here. Nice performance as far as I could see... you don't have a great sight from the cheaper seats. You can also tour the Opera House in the mornings and afternoons.

This is certainly one of the most photographed bridges on this planet: the famous Sydney Harbour Bridge. The bridge was completed in 1932 linking CBD with the Northern parts of town. If you're brave enough you can climb the bridge, otherwise you just walk or drive over it.

This is the place of the first Euopean settlement in Sydney. The area has been redeveloped in the 1970ties and now is a nice area full with small restaurants, galleries and souvenir shops. It's an excellent place to go for a stroll and have a drink afterwards.

The Botanical Gardens are one of my favourite places in Sydney. They were established in 1816 and stretch along the water from the Opera House to Lady Macquarie's Chair. The gardens are especially nice in spring when the Jacaranda trees are in full blossom. It's also a place where you can spot cockatoos.

If you're interested in boats and ships, this is the place to visit in Sydney. It traces back Australia's maritime history from Aboriginal canoes to submarines and racing yachts. Admission is free/by donation for the museum itself. Charges apply if you want to visit the boats/ships moored nearby, like the submarine HMAS Onslow or the destroyer HMAS Vampire. The museum is open 7 days a week from 9.30 am to 5pm (6pm in January).

For splendid views over Sydney you must go up the tower! It's certainly not cheap with a ticket price of 23,50 AU$ (there are some discount voucher in several tourist brochures), but it's definitely worth it on a sunny & clear day. Included in the ticket price is the admission to Oz Trek, a simulated ride across Australia. If you're brave enough, you can have a walk on top of the restaurant/observation section of the tower. The tower which was completed in 1981 is 305 m tall with the observation deck at 250m.

King's Cross is Sydney's redlight district with a couple of strip joints lining up on Darlinghurst Road. Apart from that it's also a good place to stay with lots of backpackers (especially on Victoria Street) and nice restaurants. Some people say it's quite dangerous and indeed you see some shady figures around, but I stayed there every time i visited Sydney and never had any problems.

Bondi Beach is certainly the most popular of Sydney's beaches. It's certainly a very nice, also it's not my absolute favourite. Apart from swimming and surfing it's a good place for going out and for shopping aswell.
