  • Its not very impressive, but this stone reminds of what Professor Dr.Dr. Bernhard Grzimek and his son Michael have done for the animals, this country and the whole world by fighting for the National Parks around here, so that this place will be conserved for the future.

    on the stone is written:

    MICHAEL GRZIMEK
    12.4.1934-10.1.1959
"HE GAVE ALL HE POSSESSED, INCLUDING HIS LIFE FOR THE WILD ANIMALS OF AFRICA"

    PROFESSOR BERNHARD GRZIMEK
    1909-1987
"A LIFETIME CARING FOR WILD ANIMALS AND THEIR PLACE ON OUR PLANET. IT IS BETTER TO LIGHT A CANDLE, THAN TO CURSE THE DARKNESS".

Michael, who worked as a cameraman (also in the famous film "Serengeti must not die") died when his plane crashed during the making of this film.
The film is still shown on TV, it is quite timeless. If you have the opportunity, watch it.

  • These two animals are often found together and wandering around in big groups.

In Africaans Gnus are called "Wildebeest" and thats exactly how they sometimes behave - very funny, running and jumping around as if something has stung them - and for no obvious reason.

For knowing where the most animals are when you are visiting Tanzania you should refer to the books, since they are migrating. In Ngorongoro the seem to be the whole year over. The rim is quite steep and the bigger animals do not cross it.

(BTW ever seen a coughing Gnu? Can be watched in dusty Ngorongoro)

  • Wait a little longer at the lakes, so you will see more than only the backs of these animals!

They look quite plump, but are considered to be very dangerous. Never ever get between them and the water or between them and their offspring or between them and the food ... ah, just stay away from them.

The smaller ones do look quite cute, though.

  • Yes, this lean animal can also be found here. We were sooo lucky it came so close (my zoom on the camera is not that special).

Cheetahs and Lions are living in the same areas and often the lion (as the stronger one) does take away the prey from the cheetah. Pitty. Makes it harder for them to survive.

This one was also getting out of the way of a lion. Bad for him. Good for us.

  • The crater Ngorongoro actually hosts a lot of birds.
There are Flamingoes and Pelicans at the lakes, there are falcons and other birds of prey (watch your lunch: see the warnings and danger tip)

And these here I have seen in some bird parks at home, but I canīt remember the name: any help?
    Was it Crown Cranich?

A very interesting page on animals and birds in this part of Africa. The birds are hungry too.

Hello Corinne (and welcome Simon - congratulations!). Fantastic photos. :-) The bird is called Crowned Crane. Who did you arrange your safari through - we are thinking of going in July:-)
