Penguins - Cape Town

Penguins

Cute Penguins? Penguins / Boulders Beach Review

The Cape Peninsula National Park, Boulders hosts many Penguins.

First I was a little astounded: Penguins in Africa? But yes, here you can find them.
And not only find. They are so accustomed to humans, that you can get quite close. A lot of them were also sitting on eggs (directly next to the path).
They breed here since 1983, numbers have gone up to over 2000 adult penguins...

No dogs allowed (the reasons are obvious).
You will get a leaflet how to behave: no running or handwaving because this disturbs them. Stay away from nests 1 m

Malaian Quarter, Cape Town - Cape Town

Malaian Quarter, Cape Town

Malayan Quarter - Cape Town Muslim Quarter

In the Cape Town Muslim Quarter a lot of Malayans are still living. Descendants of the Slaves the Dutch imported.

And it shows. The 18th Century Buildings (only Parterre and flat roofs) are painted in different light and cheerful colors.

Some of the steeper roads still have cobble stones.

Only later I heard, that the quarter is not really recommended to walk around (thats why we saw a lot of Big Buses touring the small streets of the quarter, the tourists just gawking out).
We didn't have any problems at all here. In the contrary, most people actually greeted and smiled at us.

Rhodes Building - Cape Town

Rhodes Building

Rhodes Building

St Georges Street, where the Rhodes Building is standing, is a pedestrian zone and you can find a lot of shops and street sellers here.

The Rhodes Building was built 1900.
It is architectural especially nice. Very typical for the Cap Dutch Stile are the windows.

Rhodes, who gave the Building its name, also named "Rhodesien" (todays Zimbabwe).

Fort / Castle - Cape Town

Fort / Castle

The Fort Museums / Historical Interest Review

The Fort or Castle is the oldest building in Cape Town. (Built between 1666 and 1679£)

The one you can visit today just replaced the old one, which was built of wood and mud and stood a little more west.

The Castle is still in use, its the headquarters of the Western Cape Military command - its quite a funny feeling to see real soldiers walking through this historic place.

There are several Museums included in the Castle.
Guided tours hourly between 10 am and 3 pm.

Directions: Next to the Train Station

Table Mountain - Cape Town

Table Mountain

Up to Table Mountain Table Mountain Review

The Table Mountain is the prominent background of Cape town.
The lower part is slowly ascending, the upper part is steep. And that is the difference to the other Mountains on the Cape. Because there is not only the Table Mountain alone, but there are many mountains along the coast.

There are possibilities to walk up the Table Mountain, but we did as most do: take the cable railway.

To get to the ground station you can take the Bus or one of the MiniCabs.

I was a little amused, to see its a Rotair - that means it is turning during your ride, so you can see the whole landscape - wherever you stand in the Cabin.
Its actually the exactly same Rotair we have on Titlis in Switzerland.

On the top of the Table Mountain you have a magnificient view - on all sides, if you walk a little. The Town, the sea and the islands in front of the land.

There are a lot of Dassies around. (Klippschiefer?), they are cute, looking like big guineapigs, but they are actually the closest relatives to the elefants.

Return ticket was 65 Rand (2000)
