The Park is today 22'270 km2 big. In the middle lies the big salt-pan (good visible as a white area from the space). There must have been a big lake here some 7-3 Million years ago, but all that is left is the salt. When (if) it rains, there a smaller lakes forming today, but the salt in it is more than double the amount as in the atlantic. Not many things can grow here. But on the south rim of the salt pan lie several springs that give water to the animals and plants.
The springs are also the best places if you want to watch animals. Best time is early morning and late afternoon, when its not so hot anymore. In the park are several springs that are lighted in the night - that makes quite a view, too! |
