In the old Egypt, Theben was more than once the capital city, not only of upper Egypt but of both, upper and lower Egypt.
As a capital it housed not only the gouvernment as a residence of the Pharaos, but was also the religious Center, with the biggest religious site ever - Karnak.

The Kings and Queens, the Pharaos were buried here on the west side of the river Nile - as the Pyramids were not safe enough from being robbed.
