Aswan is the City in the South of Egypt. Known today especially for having that impressive Dam ... and for some lovers of detective stories through the book "Death on the Nile" by Agatha Christie.
Compared to the other bigger Egyptian villages and cities Aswan is a very relaxed one. The Nile of course plays also a big part not only on this feeling, but on the whole structure of the city.
On the west rim there are some very old tombs in the hills that can be ssen. Also towering on another hill the Mausoleum of Aga Khan. On the Nile these picturesque Fellucas make turns transporting Tourists to the islands Elefantine or Kitcheners botanical garden or further upstream, where the Nile gets wilder, flowing between black rocks and green plants.
There are some Nubian villages in the surrounding. Their colorful buildings are a view not to be missed.
As for older things: the Philae Temple on an island in the Nasser lake is one of the most beautiful temples.
If you want to have it real big, make an excursion (1/2 day) to Abu Simbel. |
