I was very excited about getting to visit Athens. With its incredibly rich history and all the classic Greek writings I studied in college, I thought Athens would be overflowing with beautiful archeological sites and museums. I have to admit, however, that I was fairly disappointed with the city. Many people cautioned me before my trip that I should not spend too much time there, and I agree. There are definitely some very important and interesting things to see there, but two days (three at the very most) is plenty of time to see the major sites.
Most people go to Greece for the islands, and for them Athens is nothing more than a pit stop on the way to their final destination. If you're visiting the islands for the first time, definitely do stay in Athens for a couple nights so you can see what the city has to offer. Just keep in mind that Athens itself is not tyically considered a final destination in the same league as places like Paris, Prague, New York, or Istanbul. |
