When people talk about going to Athens and then catching a ferry to the Greek Islands, that's not quite accurate. Piraeus is actually the name of the city where the port is, though it's not very far from Athens itself and used to be connected to the city in antiquity by the famous "long walls" built to preserve the Athenians' vital access to the sea. Today Piraeus is a busy city with very little to offer travelers other than a gateway to the islands. |
