Bath is nested among seven hills between the Mendips and the Cotswolds in southwest England. It was first settled by the Celts, who are believed to have discovered medicinal qualities ofthe hot springs for which the city is famous. It was then occupied by the Romans, who promptly built their own temple and spa - Sulis Minerva.
By the 17th century Bath had become a fashionable resort, 'taking of the waters' being particularly popular. Many of Bath's finest buildings were constructed in the ensuing 150 years, making the city an interesting mixture of old and not so old architecture. |
