| Salzburg looking north from Hohensalzburg |
Salzburg boasts the most beautiful natural setting of any large city that I have ever visited. It is located in the valley of the river Salzach, and is virtually surrounded by some of the most spectacular mountains in the northern Alpe range.
Salzburg was founded a little more than 1300 years ago. Most of the original city was destroyed by fires set by pyromaniac rulers. Salzburg was a city state in the Roman empire until 1805, when it was conquered by the Austrian army. The city is filled with churches, palaces, burgher houses, and a cathedral displaying every style and modification of architecture from Romanesque to neo classical.
The musical heritage of Salzburg is of course legendary, although Mozart late in his life had many unkind words to say about his native city. |

| Pros: | "Fascinating city brim full of old world charm." | | Cons: | "A little touristy, and commercialization of Mozart." | | In A Nutshell: | "Something to see and do around every corner." |
