Art is everywhere

Oldest Capital in the US

A downtown gallery
Santa Fe is the second oldest city in the US and the oldest state capital. It was founded in 1607 by the Spanish and has been claimed by the Pueblo Indians, the Spanish Crown and Mexico before becoming the 47th (I think) state in the US in 1912 (I think). Its full name is 'La Villa Real de la Santa Fe de San Francisco de Asis' which translates 'The Royal City of the Holy Faith (Santa Fe means Holy Faith) of Saint Francis of Assisi.' It is now a very lovely and extensive art center with many museums and gallerries. The gallery in the photo is just one of many in the city.
On the Plaza

Another country

Santa Fe is a refreshing change for anyone like me who fears the homogonization of the US and indeed the world. It bills itself as the City Different and is justified in so doing. It is not like other American cities as this photo of a street on the Plaza testifies. It is one of the lovliest and also one of the cleanest cities I have visited. In this part of New Mexico I kept having the sense that I was in Mexico. Great way for foreign travel without leaving the country!

It is indeed a small world

We were on the streets of Santa Fe with two friends from Angel Fire when someone called my name. It turned out to be friends from our hometown Decatur, Georgia. As she tells the story she told her husband Bill, "There is Rex Vaughan." He replied, "We are in Santa Fe. That is not Rex." She replied, "Okay, that is not Rex, but there is Sacra (my wife)!" They joined up with us for dinner, so 4 people met up with old friends and 4 made new friends. For the restaurant, I will add a tip on it.

We're on our way to Santa Fe in a week or so--The galleries, ancient ruins and good food seem to be what everyone mentions--I want to see it all! THANKS for your tips, Rex...

Don't you love the architecture, tiles and blue skies of the south west? Good job on a great city. Wish I had more time there..maybe another trip on another day.
