More than fast cars

Start of the North Georgia Mountains

Amicalola Falls
Dawsonville is most noted for being the home of NASCAR's famous Bill Elliott ("Awesome Bill from Dawsonville") and there are some racing-related attractions here. However, I am not a fan of car racing but found a surprising variety of interesting things. One is the amazingly beautiful Amicalola Falls pictured here. I will put more in my tip and travelogue about it.
Red Lories

Australia in North Georgia?

The purpose of our trip was that we had given our granddaughter, Sally, a trip to the Kangaroo Center for her 9th birthday. As it turned out we made a full day of it - hiking up to Amicalola Falls, letting her do an hour trail ride on horseback and then the Kangaroo Center where we saw these lovely Red Lories, some of the brightest colored birds I have seen. More on this in my tips and travelogue.

A screaming bird

I had never seen a Kookaburra - only remembered singing about them as a youth in camp songs. This is the Blue Wing Kookaburra from Australia. Its "song" is such a spooky screech that legend has it the first Chinese explorers to find Australia about 600-800 years ago thought it was the sound of demons and wanted no part of a demon inhabited island so got back on their boats and sailed home. Otherwise the Aussies might be speaking Chinese today instead of English.

What a delightful birthday gift. And what a cutie pie your grandaughter is! Wonderful stories about the horses, especially Black Beauty. I was surprised about the Kangaroos also. Thanks for this lovely virtual tour.

I might have missed this page if you had not mentioned it. Kangaroos to boot! And the story about Black beauty tugged at my heart strings. Thanks Rex, I enjoyed Dawsonville, and the waterfall is remarkable. Kat
