The town of Kutna Hora grew into prominence as a silver mining center and is said to sit atop the largest silver mine in Europe. At the end of the 13th C it was providing about one third of the silver produced in Europe. Even though the mining petered out about 300 years ago it still has a mining museum and is a lovely and well preserved small city about 40 miles east of Prague. Now it may be best known for the “Bone Church” in adjacent Sedlec. In fact there was a long period of hostility between the two as the Cistercian monastery in Sedlec held religious authority over Kutna Hora until a great battle in the late 14th C when a prestigious cathedral dedicated to the Virgin Saint Barbora, patron saint of miners. However the monastery church is now home to the bones of 40,000 deceased souls and is the main attraction. It is an easy, pleasant and inexpensive day trip from Prague. |

balhannah Wed Nov 5, 2008 09:22 UTC I'm a gardener, and Dahlias are one of my favorite flowers as I grew up with them. My father grew over a 1000, and sold the flowers to the florist, and tubers to others. It was a beautiful sight when they were in flower. | Dabs Sun Apr 13, 2008 01:54 UTC We're definitely going to Sedlec to see the bone church, we may rent a car but if not I appreciate the transportation tip :-) | deecat Thu Nov 8, 2007 13:31 UTC What a fascinating page about Kutna Hora. I certainly identified with the page with flowers & understand the attraction. The "bone church" was incredible & your explanations were excellent. So glad that you were able to "redo" this wonderful set of tips. | Nemorino Sun Nov 4, 2007 16:52 UTC Looks like an interesting town. I'm glad you were able to reconstitute this page. |
