Siena is a feast for the eyes at just about every turn - the Town Hall and Tower, the "sqaure" (Il Campo), the countryside, and especially the Duomo. The Duomo is a magnificent structure of black and white marble that has so much exquisite detail it is hard to take it all in! The photo above is just one example - gargoyles galore on one of the Duomo towers. |
| | This wolf gets around This looks for all the world like the she- wolf in Rome nursing Romulus and Remus but I understand it is the Sienese wolf and the twins are ? I know there is another story here, so if you read this and know it, please send it to me (cheap way to get help building pages, huh?). This one is in Tolomei Square. There is another one in the Municipal Museum. |
| | The crazy horse race You probably know that twice each summer Siena has a wild horse race aroung Il Campo called the Palio. This is such a big deal that we were there 2 or 3 weeks prior to the race and encountered the group in the photo. They represent one of the 17 districts which compete in the race and were having a parade to psyche up the home team. I say this race is wild because I don't think there are any rules and that the first horse across the finish line wins, whether he has a rider or not! |

rubbersoul75 Sat Jun 24, 2006 21:10 UTC One big postcard, good way to summarize one of Italys most special towns. I like your take on the Duomo, one of the most thoroughly beautiful churches inside and out. A return to Siena is in our near future... thanks for sharing. Ciao | vesna04 Wed Oct 12, 2005 23:42 UTC I would like to visit it on my next trip to Italy. Lovely page ! | ForestqueenNYC Thu Aug 25, 2005 03:02 UTC It's been a long time since i was in Siena, so I enjoyed refreshing my memory with your tips. I did, however, like the panforte and I don't like fruit cake. I also liked an almond cookie that is typical sienese. I don't remember the name of it though. | deecat Thu Jul 14, 2005 04:44 UTC Rex, I so enjoyed your tips on Siena. We've been there twice and enjoyed it both times. Outstanding restaurant tip! Hotel sounds grand. You have some superior photos, too. I so like your narrative style. LOL about the Patron Saint and Rodney Dangerfield. |
