Stenungsund is the Swedish town that has the fastest increasing population at the moment. It all started with a collection of houses around Kyrkberget. It obviously started a lot earlier, with settlers who hunted and fished and eventually broke the ground. Their traces can still be seen in rich ancient monuments and along walking trails, in the form of settlements, cairns and graves.
Two ladies installed a bath tub in a public bath on Stenungsön. That's how the seaside resort era begun in the middle of the 19th century, which turned the island into a playground for the rich. As time went on they bought land and built beautiful houses, that are painstakingly cared for and that give us the attractive appearance of Stenungsön. This verdant island is still an oasis with plentiful opportunities for bathing and recreational pursuits.
Today Stenungsund is the centre for the petrochemical industry in Sweden. Its distinguished silhouette is four giant chimneys, belonging to a large power plant. In the summer you can visit the factories and learn more about plastics and gases.
In Kulturhuset Fregatten, which is the heart and pulse when it comes to cultural events, whilst also offering conferences, Tourist Information, cinema, coffee shop, gallery and library. |

|  | the outdoor life... Stenungsund has a fantastic environment for outdoor life. Mushroom picking, hiking, berry picking and fishing. If you want unspoilt nature, there are plenty of opportunities in Svartedalen, which is one of Sweden's largest natural wilderness areas. There are windbreaks, lakes and excellent walking trails. |
right of public access... In Sweden, everyone has the right to be out in the countryside-- visitors from abroad as well as Swedish citizens. We call this "the right of public access". It is a benefit not found in a great many other countries. One may also look upon the right of public access as a great freedom. But our freedom in the countryside must not infringe upon the freedom of others.
The right of public access requires consideration, responsibility and good judgement. We must not damage the landscape or animal life, and we must show consideration for both landowners and for others who are out in the countryside.
The essence of the right of public access is concisely expressed by the phrase, "Do not disturb, do not destroy".
