Taishan is an area in Guangdong Province. It is basically a city that is surrounded by an abundance of small villages. The area of Taishan is home to about 1.3 million Chinese overseas. In fact it is known as China's first homeland for overseas Chinese. This are more than 1 million people who reside there currently. It has certainly tried to promote its tourism, especially to the overseas Chinese coming back to the homeland for a visit, but it retains much of its character. It still maintains the way of life that is the tenuous balance between the modern and the traditional Chinese culture.

This area is where my ancestors from several generations came. Heritage and tradition mix equally with modern society as some of its people struggle into modernization while others are content to follow the ways that have been practiced for hundreds of generations.
