I like to think of Riomaggiore as the first of the five quaint towns that make up the Cinque Terre. Situated to the northwest of La Spezia, it is the first town on the local train route heading towards Levanto. As with its other four companion cities, a blink of an eye on the train will leave you wondering if there was even a town to be seen!
Because this is the first of the five in the Cinque Terre (and because I am a food fanatic), I feel obligated to write about the incredible seafood delights that await you in each town. If that wasn't enough incentive to visit the Cinque Terre, here is another tidbit - it is also the birthplace of pesto!!! The Cinque Terre is also known for its sciacchetra wine. It is a potent sweet wine that is made from dried grapes. It is a great dessert wine that you can have after a satisfying ligurian meal!! It's tasty with a few mild cookies. If you like sweet liqueurs, don't miss their limoncino... a liqueur made from lemons!!! |
