Alicante is the second largest city in the Valencian Region. It is the capital of the southern most of the three Valencian provinces 30 kilometers to Torrevieja and is situated on the coast and surrounded by mountainous terrain. The Province of Alicante has a long tradition of strong links with the international community due to its coastal location and its history of occupation. The city is built on two ancient Roman settlements, Akra Leuka and Lucentum ("City of Light"). There is also much remaining evidence, in the form of ruins, culture, and language, of the long occupation by the Moors. The town has three museums and two castles, one of which is Santa Barbara , the castle imposing on top of a hill overlooking the bay. The city has a theatre, cinemas and numerousrestaurants, bars, and nightclubs. Because of the warm climate and the licensing laws, more flexible than in other parts of Europe and the United States, the nightlife tends to spill out onto the streets and often goes on all night. |
| | The city and the province are famous for the local festivities. Each year there are "Moros and Cristianos Fiestas" which depict the centuries of Moorish occupation of the province with street processions, staged battles and much celebration. During the week preceding lent, the streets are full of people in fancy-dress celebrating Carnival. "Les Hogueras de San Juan", the official fiestas of the city, are held in June and are accompanied by street processions, open-air concerts and celebrations which go on day and night. On the 24th of June enormous paper mach'e figures are burnt at midnight. This is followed by five nights of magnificent firework displays held on the city beach. |
Alicante has excellent national and international communications. Its airport, just ten kilometres from the city centre, has regular scheduled and charter flights to all major destinations: its port has ferries to the Balearic Islands (Mallorca, Menorca, and Ibiza) and North Africa. The city is on the A-7 motorway (which goes all the way to the French border) and is connected via national motorways to southern and central Spain; there are also rail links with all major Spanish and European cities. | | |
