Granada lies in the foothills of Spain's Sierra Nevada mountains. One of Spain's most spectacular historical World Heritage cities, and millions of tourists and international students visit each year. It is located in the east of Andalucia. Was first settled by native tribes in the prehistoric period, and was known as Ilbyr. When the Romans colonised southern Spain, they built their own city here and called it Illibris. The Arabs, invading the peninsula in the 8th century, gave it its current name of Granada. It was the last Muslim city to fall to the Christians in 1492, at the hands of Queen Isabel of Castile and her husband Ferdinand of Aragon. Granada has a population of approximately 241,471. It is well connected by road, rail and air.* |
| | The Alhambra Palace here is one of the most visited monument in Spain and one of the most beautiful in the world. From here it is about 2 hours drive to the famous Sierra Nevada mountains, the finest ski resorts in Europe. Its natural parks made the place a paradise for anyone seeking relaxation, tranquility and contact with nature during their vacation. |
Granada's climatic and geographical diversity, combining mountain, sea and low-lying meadows, has given rise to a rich and varied gastronomy. From the mountains come the famous Trevelez hams, cured in the snow. The Alpujarra region boasts such dishes as chicken with tomatoes and "migas alpujarreñas" (bread-crumbs with garlic and green peppers). In coastal zones, popular dishes include tasty brochettes, delicious baked sardines and "ajo blanco", chilled garlic and almond soup. The most authentic specialties in the city are the Sacromonte omelet, chicken in garlic and broad beans sautéed with cured ham. Spain in general reminds me of home, Philippines because of their pastries. The most traditional desserts in this province are Torta Real cake from Motril, "Pestiños" (honey-coated pancakes) from Velez, "Tocinos de Cielo" (rich egg and caramel sweets) from Guadix, "Roscos" (ring cakes) from Loja, "Piononos" (tiny cream-filled pastries) from Santa Fe, "churros" (long fried donuts) from Churriana which i love very much and the rich sweets made from almonds, a Moorish legacy. | | |

Nemorino Wed Apr 18, 2007 09:33 UTC Granada seems to have acquired a huge tourist infrastructure in the 44 years since I was there, with hop-on-hop-off buses and advance bookings for the Generalife. I spent a rainy week there in January 1963 on my bicycle tour of Spain and Portugal. | yumyum Fri Mar 30, 2007 11:32 UTC So many beautiful places in this world and so little time to see them. Thanks for sharing! | scottishvisitor Mon Mar 26, 2007 21:34 UTC I'm glad to be first to visit your new page = the Cathedral and Monastery would be plus points for me & I love the name Granada! |
