The first traces of this little town built within a castle come from the Neolitic period. Was occupied by the Romans during 1st Century, the Visigoths in the 5th Century, the arabs in the 8th until it was finally conquered by the first portuguese king during the formation of Portugal in the year 1148. The traces of osto of these cultures are visible in the architecture of the houses, chapels and the walls. Although most of the gold and silver artefacts were stolen during the French invasions in 1808. The town is pretty and cozy, the houses are colourful and have flowers hanging all over. It can be a bit touristy during the summer. A very nice get away destination for a weekend and only at 1hour from Lisbon if you take the highway. |
