Once an Island....

the fortress
Peniche was once an Island, a safe hideout from the roman troops. Centuries later, the ocean pulled back and a fortress was built by D.João III where you can now find the local museum. This fortress served many purposes through history besides the obvious strategic importance of the past. D.Filipe II troops (The second "spanish" king that ruled Portugal) and Junot (one of the Napoleon's generals stayed there. Later on during Salazar's dictatorship in the 20th Century, it became a political prison.
Peniche is now a lobster, sardines and tuna fishing village.
One of my favourite "get away" during the winter. The fish is obviously fresh and the restaurants are good. Its claimed to be a good surfing spot as well.
It gets cold but the strong smell of the ocean invades everything and I never get bored of watching the sunset on those cliffs. So, my view of Peniche is passionate, I cant be distant on this one.
If youre going to be in Peniche, might as well drive through the villages nearby, Baleal is a very nice one and is only 10 minutes away by car heading north along the coast.
favourite moment of the day...
