Chiang Mai , the Northern Capital of Thailand, often referred to as "The Rose of the North" was founded by King Mengrai on 1926 as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom. Sited approximately 700km, north of Bangkok on the Ping River in the Chiang Mai valley. It is some 310m above sea level, which accounts for its slightly drier and cooler climate than most other parts of this country. It is the home of various colourful minorities, like Karen, Lisu, Akha, Hmong, etc.
Chiang Mai's best months are mid-November through mid-February when the air is cool and the skies are clear. Temperatures average between 13C to 28C, the hills are even cooler.
