This is my first step out exploring the world. I remembered this trip came about when my friend went to Hong Kong for a Buddist ceremony and asked me to come along. As i am not a very religious person, i went exploring this island while my friend attended the ceremony.

I was told that HK has nice food and also is a shopping paradise. But i am quite disappointed when i reached. As i dont take pork cause i hate the smell of pork, same to mutton, i wasnt use to the food there. I ended up eating Macdonalds but i did enjoy some of the local delicacy like smelly beancurd. Although the smell is horrible, but the taste is really very nice and delicious. If you have the chance, you must try it.

As for shopping paradise, well i find that it is quite compartible to Singapore and the prices are also not very cheap. But if you know the correct place to shop, you can find some nice clothes at a reasonable price.

But i dont like the service in Hong kong. I remembered once i went into a jewellery shop looking for some unique designs for my mum, as i dont really speak cantonese, the shop attendant knew that i am a foreigner. They tried to be very friendly and started selling expensive stuffs to me, well i had my budget therefore i started telling them i am only willing to pay for a certain amount. Immediately their faces changed and they just walked off leaving me looking at the display alone.

Another time is when i was shopping in the Ladies' Market, i was browsing at some T-shirts displaying on the stall looking for a nice design T-shirt for my brother when this man came to me and said to me, go off if you are not buying, you have been browsing for so long, if you are not interested, stop messing up my stall. Wow and i thought i have the right to browse. I didnt know browsing also have a time limit in Hong Kong??!!!

Anyway, all of these above are all my own personal view and encounters. I apologised if the above view offended anyone.

Pros and Cons
  • Pros:Shop in small shops and can bargin for better price
  • Cons:Have to put up with the face change of the sale personal if you are not buying

Sorry to hear that you have such bad times in Hong Kong. Hope you still have some nice experience. As a resident, I get used to the culture here.

I must admit that it took me some time (about a year!), but get to know it and it's fantastic. And the food is certainly there. Fog at Po-Lin too! Next time'll be better, Jem

Hi, I understand what you mean about the traders in Hong Kong. When they see a tourist, they see $$$$. Thankfully, not all the traders are the same. But it is much cheaper to shop than in UK.

Interesting. My daughter found it a bit of a struggle to come to grips with HK.

I'm sorry to hear your bad experiences @ HK. It's definitely a lot different from Singapore... the nanny state mentality wouldn't survive there... Next time I hope you can get to try the best of HK's cuisine = )
