Cheap Weekender to Hamburg

by weewatty - last update: May 10, 2005

Cheap as Chips

Rathaus Viewed from Spire of St Petri
I found the following deal:- £75 for Flights and 3 nights accomadation in the 2nd largest city in Germany, and I thought to myself "I'll have a bit of that!!!"

Rounded up 6 of my good mates and off we popped for a weekender to Hamburg.
Me Outside our Budget Accomadation

Sleazeville

The Reeperbahn District(aka Red Light District) is tacky, but its part of the attraction, its relatively safe, well policed, just gotta keep yours wits about you and not be naive the same way you would in any big city.

Packed full of partygoers on weekend evenings and a great place for us to find our cheapo Hotel.

Hamburg Fischmarkt

An utterly unmissable experience of any weekend trip to Hamburg is to visit the rather extensive and unique Sunday morning Fish Market.

Starting at 5am and thronging with people, from revellers finishing off their night out to couples out to meet their friends to old folk getting their weekly groceries. On the pic here you can just make out that there is a band playing on a stage at the far end of the hall, belting out Robbie Williams covers they were.

Read more on my tip on it but if you can just go and find out for yourself.
FischMarkt - Bizarre
AOL Arena Packed to Capacity

AOL Arena - Home of Hamburg SV

As is an nigh on neccesity with any trip to Europe for me I made sure that we could take in a football game featuring the local team, on this occasion Hamburg SV.

We arrived in Hamburg on a Thursday and managed to get tickets for Saturday afternoons match without any problem, cost 26 euros.

Enjoyed the atmosphere of a packed out stadium, makes a change from what i've been used to of late watching, my local team infront of crowds of about 2,000 :-(

Isn't it cool how, at the AOL Stadium in Hamburg, how easy it is buy 5-6 beers with those plastic funnel glasses? Saw Manchester City play there in 2002.
