Arles has been home to many, for the last few thousand years, ranging from Romans from the Empire to famous artists such as Vincent van Gogh. A charming town, it has many hotels within walking distance of the old Roman Amphitheatre, as well as many small restaurants and cafes. Arles is more than just the amphitheatre...you can explore the old city walls, walk through the market on market day, visit the cafe van Gogh painted, or visit the local cathedral.
We arrived in Arles from Avignon, and used it as a home base to also visit Les Baux (by bus) and Aix-en-Provence (by train).
Of all the places we stayed during our 2003 vacation in France, I felt that Arles had the best small-town Provence ambience.

Thanks Richard. This is a really good page on this lovely city. Next time I will do what you did and stay here rather than Avignon.
We won't be able to visit Arles this trip, but it is definitely a 'must see'. Thanks for the tips and also for the kind comments on my SF page.
France is a great country for a road trip... you just never know what you may find!? Cheers Jason
