Arles has been home to many, for the last few thousand years, ranging from Romans from the Empire to famous artists such as Vincent van Gogh. A charming town, it has many hotels within walking distance of the old Roman Amphitheatre, as well as many small restaurants and cafes. Arles is more than just the amphitheatre...you can explore the old city walls, walk through the market on market day, visit the cafe van Gogh painted, or visit the local cathedral. We arrived in Arles from Avignon, and used it as a home base to also visit Les Baux (by bus) and Aix-en-Provence (by train). Of all the places we stayed during our 2003 vacation in France, I felt that Arles had the best small-town Provence ambience. |
