Marseille is well known as a port, and the setting for "The Count of Monte Cristo". It's France's second largest city, first founded by the Greeks in the days before the Roman Empire. It's a bustling place, with a metro and bus system for getting around, and a central train station and an international airport to connect the city to the rest of France and to the outside world. While you are in Marseille, you should be sure to check out Chateau d'If, especially if you're a fan of the Dumas book (as I am). There are areas in Marseille where you should not go at night. Use common sense, as always. We visited here as a part of our 2003 vacation in France, and had a great time! |
