  • This was one of the many highlights of our visit. Being an engineerint type, I really was blown away by its sheer size. At night, they put on an impressive light show.

If you're afraid of heights, don't take the stairs back down, you may get freaked out by all that open air below you.

Arc de Triomphe: Walk across to the Arc de Triomphe, if you dare!

  • A first visit to Paris wouldn't be complete without a visit to the Arc de Triomphe. There's a traffic circle around the monument, and we didn't realize that there's a walkway underneath the traffic, so we waited for a break in the traffic and walked across, a little un-nerving.

Visitors will find a tourist office nearby.

  • I'd recommend taking the metro to the Arc de Triomphe, and then walking down the Champs Elysees towards Place de la Concorde and the Louvre. It's a beautiful walk.

  • Place de la Concorde is at the end of the Champs Elysees. It has a number of statues, a fountain, and l'Obelisque. When we were visiting in 2001, there was a Ferris Wheel present.

  • This is a well-known bookstore, selling both used and new books (I believe). In the photo, I'm clutching the D&K guidebook that had brought us through the neighbourhood to the site.

  • Your best bet for getting into the Louvre is through the metro entrance. The Louvre is always crowded, especially around the Mona Lisa. As you can see from the photo, the Mona Lisa is not as large as you might expect. It's behind protective glass, protecting against hands and flashes alike. Elsewhere, we found columns from the palace of Darius, king of Persia.

  • Les Invalides is a large complex, containing the Musee de l'Armee, the Hotel des Invalides, and the Dome Church, all of which we visited. The museum features the exploits of the French army, especially during the Napoleonic era. The Hotel des Invalides was originally constructed as a hospital for wounded soldiers. The Dome Church was constructed by the Sun King, originally intended to be the location of his tomb, but instead fulfills a similar function for Napoleon.

Notre Dame de Paris: careful climbing the stairs!

  • Notre Dame is a fully functioning church still, so be mindful when touring. You can pay to climb the stairs to the top, to see the gargoyles and the square below. Be careful, the staircase is narrow and still the original and now-worn stone. The day we climbed, it had rained earlier, and the staircase was a little slippery from trodden-in water.

  • A statue in honour of Charlemagne, king of France, is in the square outside Notre Dame. In the photo, it's the statue of the man on horseback, on the left side (close to the Seine).
