The history of Stirling is rich with many legends and events from the figure of William Wallace who fought and won the battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297 against an English army.
Stirling heritage dates back 800 years to the twelfth century, when the town first received the burgh title. It was granted a Royal Charter, becoming one of the most important towns of medieval Scotland. Stirling, meaning 'place of strife', stands at the heart of Scotland both geographically and historically, lying in the narrow waist of the country between the Rivers Forth and Clyde.
The geographical position forced any traveller going north to south or south to north to pass through Stirling. Stirling was therefore the key to the realm purely because of its vital geographical and strategic position. Even a map today will indicate how major roads and railway lines pass through this town rather than any other in that stretch of the country. The importance of the area has persisted throughout history, even during the Second World War as German military maps of the 1940s show. The realities of geography never disappear.
Through the 1540s to the 1560s Scotland was at the hub of much of the military activity in Britain. The 1540s also saw a major war, fought in two phases, between England and Scotland. Although never directly attacked, one central participant in the drama of this era was Stirling and its castle.
The origins of the Government of Scotland during the reign of Mary Queen of Scots, lie in the early fifteenth century. |
| | Stirling Castle view This is a view from Stirling Castle while visiting it. Was wonderful sunny and warm day so I profit to walk all around and as much as I have seen the most I liked it. |
| | Four figures in my camera The environment and the people make me feel really confortable!
I took this picture while I was lie down in the grass of the Castle fields. When I turned on I found these four figures into my camera view point and a beautiful sky.... so I took it!
