Arriving in Croatia

by raintown4 - last update: Aug 7, 2004

arriving by ferry
We traveled from Ancona, Italy to Split, Croatia on the overnight ferry (see the transportation tip below), arriving at sunrise. It was an interesting and somewhat nerve-wracking experience that left us short on sleep. Nevertheless, this was the beginning of a very long and good day.
Diocletan's Palace
We started by exploring Diocletian's Palace. The original palace was built around the year 300 AD. The old town buildings and streets now occupy what was once the rooms, courtyards and corridors of the palace. The town joke is that tourists will ask for directions to the palace while standing inside it. We wandered into the Saturday morning market. Its quite large- we bought figs, pistachios, cheese, bread, cherries, tomatoes, and peaches. See a few more pictures of the oldtown/palace in the travelogue.

At midmorning, we traveled an hour northwest and spent much of the day at the wonderful Krka National Park. We then went to Trogir for the evening.
